24th June 2021

Class 4/5 and Class 5/6 in self isolation - please see headteacher letter issued to parents and staff this week. Please note all guidance is based on advice from Public Health England/North Yorkshire Team and the DfE.

There seems to be many mixed messages circulating regarding isolation.

Our advice comes from the teams who advise schools - if advice to you from Track and Trace differs to school then please follow the school advice.  

School guidance for pupils and staff is non-negotiable.

We have a duty to keep children and staff safe and follow only the advice designated to schools to keep the community sfae and to stop the spread of infection.


There is a new delta variant spreading across the area - please refer to headteacher emails updating parents on how this may be affecting our school community.



I hope that all of our children have managed to have a well-deserved, relaxing sunny break. We will continue with our Recovery Curriculum for the remainder of the term and are currently awaiting confirmation from the Government /Local Authority as to whether there will be any further lifting of restrictions toward the end of this month.

It is very much hoped that conditions will be deemed safe enough to allow parents and grandparents to be allowed on to the school premises and that we can engage once more in public events later on this term…Fingers are firmly crossed.

In the meantime, and until further notice, the current Covid-19 Risk Assessment will remain unchanged apart from the following adaptions, for which I would like to give notice:

  • The separate bubble groups of Reception and Nursery may be integrated for specific activities, into one bubble group, from next Monday 14th June 2021
  • The separate bubble groups of Class 1 and 2 may be integrated into one bubble group, for specific activities, from next Monday 14th June 2021.

These adaptions will aid teaching and learning /transition opportunities as well as ease staffing pressures. Any further changes will be incorporated into an updated Risk Assessment, to be sent out to staff and parents in the near future.

Please be aware that in the coming days, we will be issuing parents with class lists for next September 2021. On receipt of these lists, I ask that parents read through them carefully and if there are any questions or concerns then they are advised to raise them directly the school office. As we will be opening up a new class from September, we envisage that most pupils will be accommodated within their chronological year groups when we start the new academic year (unless there are ongoing special educational needs or special circumstances to indicate otherwise).

Please note the following key dates for your diary (see teacher class letters for other dates involving your child’s class):

  • Friday 18th June - Closing date for new teacher applications
  • Tuesday 22nd June – Tempest Class/Group Photograph Morning for all children
  • Thursday 24th June – Interview Day to appoint a new teacher
  • Friday 25th June – Local Promotional Day (children chosen to represent the school -details to follow)
  • Wednesday 14th July- Settle College Transfer Evening
  • Thursday 15th July – Settle College Transfer Day / Primary School Transfer Afternoon
  • Wednesday 21st July – Sports Day (details to follow and fingers crossed parents can join us!)
  • Friday 23rd July – Last Day (we will host an End of Year Service at the Ascension Church if we are allowed to host a public event)

I hope that in the coming weeks, we will continue to see restrictions lifted further across the country (if it is deemed safe to do so) and that we will continue to have uninterrupted provision for the remainder of the school year.

Please note that though secondary schools have seen a lifting of some restrictions to the wearing of face masks, the restrictions for our school are at present unaffected, We hope to update our school risk assessment when we return after the half term and any lifting of restrictions will be announced then.


Please find attached an updated risk assessment for the continued opening of school, which takes into account the most up to date advice from the government and Local Authority. It is expected that all persons working or visiting the site are familiar with this document and follow the guidelines stipulated.

Please note the following:

There will now be the opportunity to integrate some bubbles for education and safeguarding purposes as detailed in the risk assessment. The Headteacher will further discuss these options with senior leaders and teachers at the two schools over the coming days, with some adaptions put in place from 26/04/2021. Any changes will be shared with parents and pupils via newsletter.

Off-site educational visits will not take place this half term but we are hopeful that some visits including residential visits will be able to take place post May half term

At present parents are still not allowed on the school site and must wear masks and follow school guidelines when collecting and dropping off. We are hoping that restrictions may be relaxed in the second half of the summer term to allow some public/parent events and wait with anticipation and fingers crossed as to future government announcements.  

The vaccine initiative is having a significant impact on virus levels and we look with optimism to the future, however, we do need to keep vigilant and follow the risk assessment fully to ensure everyone keeps safe. 

Your ongoing co-operation and support is much appreciated as we edge slowly back to normality.

Update 1st March

New risk assessments have been issued for when all pupils return to school from 8th March 2021. Please find below risk assessments for the wider school opening, PE, drama and music teaching. Teachers have also completed a risk assessment for their class and are in the process of sharing this with parents. Please also refer to the headteachers letter with FAQ which is in the PDf section below outlining what a school return from 8th March will look like and how the school will seek to deliver its recovery/catch up curriculum. You will note that at present the school will not be taking part in residential or school trips, however this situation may improve if the pandemic situation continues to improve and government restrictions ease. Class teachers will be in touch shortly regarding provisional arrangements for those classes whose residential visits have been affected this year. If we are able to comply with guidelines and conduct an offsite/adventurous activity safely nearer to home then we will do so. More details to follow...

Update 23/02/21

School will re-open for all pupils from Monday 8th March 2021. Mr Wright has issued a letter to parents today outlining in detail the next steps for our school and describing what provision will look like in the Spring and Summer terms. The letter hopefully answers many of the questions parents might have regarding the return to school. A copy of this letter can be found in the attachments section below this page. Update 22/02/21

Prime Minister Announcement expected today regarding a 'road map' for re-opening schools - a letter will be issued to parents by the Executive Headteacher Mr Wright, on 23/02/2021 outlining next steps for the Federation as we move forward to re-opening the school for all pupils in the coming weeks. 

Update 02/02/21

We are expecting a lot of snow over the coming weeks - lockdown provision will continue to operate but we do ask that when weather and roads are particularly precarious, parents take their time and do not rush in. Parents need to leave plenty of time for their journey and we ask that plenty of time be set aside to ensure children are collected promptly from After School Club. When the weather is particularly bad, only use the lockdown service if absolutely essential - reduced staffing during lockdown means even less staff are on hand to stay open during bad snow days. Remote learning will continue as normal so don't take the risk of coming to school unless you have no other option. Stay safe - especially when the roads have not been gritted!

Please note that we are able to offer provision for key worker pupils, vulnerable pupils and Nursery age pupils only - all other learning will be delivered remotely. Teachers have been in touch with all parents today via Tapestry and SeeSaw. Again, we apologise for the inconvenience caused.

*Update re: school opening following the Prime Minister's announcement at 8pm 4/1/2021*

Following the announcement of Boris Johnson this evening our primary school federation will be closed with immediate effect from tomorrow for all but key worker children and vulnerable pupils.

It looks like we will be in lockdown until at least the February half term.

Class teachers will provide remote learning to pupils during this period and they will be in touch with parents tomorrow morning to outline how remote learning will be organised and planned for their class. Opportunities for parents to come and collect hard copies of work will also be be organised.

I ask that parents allow teachers time  tomorrow to re-organise their planning and resources given such late notice.

Setting up for long term home learning is somewhat different to normal planning and there will need to be a period of adaption.

Our teachers have put a lot of time  into preparing classes during the Christmas holiday , including today ( some staff still working in school until 7pm) , to get things ready for the children tomorrow. So we need to give then some valuable time to set things up properly.

Breakfast and after school clubs will run as normal for vulnerable pupils and key worker children only.

Pupils from Kirkby Malham, eligible as key worker /vulnerable pupils may join us at Settle tomorrow morning where provision will be based.

Children approved as key workers / vulnerable pupils in the summer lockdown by the school will automatically be eligible to come in tomorrow.

Support staff from both schools will meet at Settle school tomorrow morning and we will plan a support timetable for vulnerable and key worker children.

Breakfast Club staff will come in as normal to meet and greet the children.

More information will be sent out in due course.

Update 4th January 2021

A new risk assessment has been posted on the website to take into account national and regional developments linked to the raise in infection rates across the country. Please see below. It is complemented by our Positive Behaviour Policy which is also attached below. Please be aware that at 8pm the Prime Minister will be making a speech to the nation. It is anticipated that there will be further adaptions to primary and secondary school provision announced. We do not know at this stage how the announcement will affect our school. Until we know any different, we are expecting to welcome children back to school tomorrow on Tuesday 5th January 2021.

Update 3rd January 2021

Dear Parent/Carer

I am able to confirm that our school WILL be opening on Tuesday 5th January 2021 as planned.

I believe that the staffing levels and Risk Assessment control measures put in place, mean that it is safe to do so. 

There is, as you will be aware, an evolving national situation emerging regard the management of coronavirus. Parents need to be prepared that whilst we will open next week, there is no guarantee that our school will remain unaffected in the days, weeks or months to come. We must remain vigilant.

As normal, we will endeavour to keep parents updated if there is a situational change in our school.

In the meantime, we are hoping that there will be no disruption to our normal provision this coming week. 

Final confirmation of arrangements for re-opening, including an updated Risk Assessment, will be issued to parents on Monday 4thJanuary 2021. 

It will be lovely to see the children again and to try and maintain education provision as close to normal as possible, as we successfully did last term. 

My sincere thanks to all our staff team for their ongoing dedication and professionalism and for providing a great service to our pupils throughout the whole Coronavirus period. In many ways they are unsung heroes.

While it is safe and appropriate to open we will continue to do so and all decisions made by the school will continue to be made with the priority of keeping our children, staff and community safe. If ever the governors or I believe that the school has become ‘unsafe’ then appropriate action will be immediately taken.

Update 2nd January 2021

**School New Year Opening Update**

Please be aware of the NEU Union announcement  today,  which will likely affect the ability of primary schools (including our own ) to open next week. Our school position moving forward will now depend on legal factors as yet to be confirmed to Primary Headteachers and governors.

It may well be that our ability to open will not be clarified until Monday 4th January. Please be prepared in case the opening date of Tuesday 5th January is delayed.

My apologies to parents and governors for the uncertainty and inconvenience. As a maintained school we await the advice of next steps from our Local Authority. I will update parents as soon as I know more.

Update 18th December

Please be assured that now school has closed, we remain staffed for any incidents of Covid-19 that need reporting.  

Please can you ensure you follow the below:  

Please email reporting between now and 23rd December to [email protected] and include in your message the following information: 

• your name 

• child's name 

• when they first started with symptoms 

• when they were last in school and  

• when you received a positive test result.  

This service shall be in place until the evening of the 23rd December, so we can then let the wider school population know of any cases, to ensure staff and students isolate and follow Public Health England's criteria and guidance.

**Guidance for clinically extremely vulnerable staff and children**

The Department of Health and Social Care has published guidance on shielding and protecting people who are clinically extremely vulnerable from coronavirus (COVID-19).

This guidance advises individuals who are clinically extremely vulnerable to work from home and not to go into work. Individuals in this group will have been identified through a letter from the NHS or from their GP. Staff should talk to their employers about how they will be supported, including working from home where possible, during the period of national restrictions.

All other staff should continue to attend work, including those living in a household with someone who is clinically extremely vulnerable.

We now know more about the virus, and most children who were identified as clinically extremely vulnerable at the beginning of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak are no longer identified as such. Schools should encourage parents to speak to their GP or specialist clinician, as soon as possible, if they have not already done so, to understand whether their child should still be classed as clinically extremely vulnerable.

Those children whose doctors have confirmed they are still clinically extremely vulnerable are advised not to attend school whilst this advice is in place. Where a conversation with a GP or specialist clinician has not taken place, the public health advice is that the child is still clinically extremely vulnerable and they are advised not to attend school. In these situations, we expect schools to be able to offer clinically extremely vulnerable children access to remote education, in line with previous guidance.

**Guidance for clinically vulnerable staff and children**

Staff and children who are clinically vulnerable or have underlying health conditions but are not clinically extremely vulnerable, may continue to attend early years, childcare and school settings in line with current guidance.

Trainee teachers are critical workers and able to go on placement in schools

Initial teacher training trainees are classed as critical workers and are therefore able to undertake practical training experience in schools and to travel to and from their placement, in line with the arrangements agreed with their host school. We are asking local authority public health teams to ensure they make this position clear in their discussions with schools.

Update - Sunday 1st November 2020

We look forward to welcoming children back to school following the October half term break. Please note that general provision will continue as per last half term including Breakfast and After School Club wraparound services (pending further government clarification on school clubs, expected in the coming days).

Mr Wright will be issuing a letter in the coming days to update parents on any changes to the school risk assessment process and to clarify events and activities taking place/or not taking place this term. The school will aim to keep services and provision as normal as possible with the focus continuing to be the well being of our pupils and the delivery of a Recovery Curriculum that ensures ALL children continue to make expected progress at school.

Update - Monday 5th October 2020

We have been made aware of a member of the school community who have tested positive for COVID 19 today.  Letters have been issued to parents/staff today via email. Contact the school office on 01729 822019 if you require further information. School will continue to run as normal though aspects of provision/ certain class bubbles may be affected (please see headteacher letter). Lockdown of bubbles/after school provision will last 14days with provision returning to normal on Monday 19th October

What to do if you develops symptoms of COVID 19

If your child develops symptoms of COVID-19, they must not come to school and should remain at home for at least 10 days from the date when their symptoms appeared. Anyone with symptoms will be eligible for testing and this can be arranged via https://www.nhs.uk/ask-for-a-coronavirus-test or by calling 119. 

All other household members who remain well, must stay at home and not leave the house for 14 days. This includes anyone in your ‘Support Bubble’.

The 14-day period starts from the day when the first person in the house became ill.

Household members should not go to work, school or public areas and exercise should be taken within the home.

If you require help with buying groceries, other shopping or picking up medication, or walking a dog, you should ask friends or family. Alternatively, you can order your shopping online and medication by phone or online.

Household members staying at home for 14 days will greatly reduce the overall amount of infection the household could pass on to others in the community

If you are able, move any vulnerable individuals (such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions) out of your home, to stay with friends or family for the duration of the home isolation period.


The most common symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) are recent onset of:

  • a new continuous cough
  • a high temperature
  • a loss of, or change in, your normal sense of taste or smell (anosmia)

For most people, coronavirus (COVID-19) will be a mild illness.

How to stop COVID-19 spreading

There are things you can do to help reduce the risk of you and anyone you live/work with getting ill with COVID-19


  • wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds
  • use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available
  • wash your hands as soon as you get home
  • cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze
  • put used tissues in the bin immediately and wash your hands afterwards

Update 16th September

It is worth reminding parents what happens if their child is tested for Coronavirus and the impact on the functioning of the class/bubble. The advice has been shared in our school risk assessment but is worth highlighting again through this update:

If someone tests positive, they should follow the ‘stay at home: guidance https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-stay-at-home-guidan… for households with possible or confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) infection’ and must continue to self-isolate for at least 10 days from the onset of their symptoms and then return to school only if they do not have symptoms other than cough or Loss of sense of smell/taste. This is because a cough or anosmia can last for several weeks once the infection has gone. The 10-day period starts from the day when they first became ill. If they still have a high temperature, they should keep self-isolating until their temperature returns to normal. Other members of their household should continue self-isolating for the full 14 days.

Schools will send home those people who have been in close contact with the person who has tested positive, advising them to self-isolate for 14 days since they were last in close contact with that person when they were infectious.

Update 15th September

The Frequently Asked Questions document has been updated and includes the school position on whether a child should come into school if they have a cold or are are feeling under the weather plus other updated information.

As a general rule minor ailments are acceptable but symptoms such as having a fever or heavy cold mean a child should really stay at home. We want to maintain the widespread health of the school as far as possible and keep everyone's immunity as high as we can during these autumn and winter months.

If you or your child has multiple symptoms including:

a high temperature above 37.8 degrees,

a fever or chills,

a sore throat,

a new and continuous cough,

muscle aches and a sense of fatigue,

or a new loss of smell or taste


Update 7th September

It has been fantastic to have everyone back. The morning drop off routine needs a little tweaking but as it was the first day and a number of children were quite anxious it seemed appropriate to take our time to get everything calm and positive for the children.

Moving forwards, we would like to ask that all parents from Year 1 onwards (unless their child has special needs considerations) to drop their child at the school gate (i.e grey gate entrance for Key Stage One or Two) in the morning,where a member of staff from their class will be waiting.

Parents of children in Nursery and Reception can continue to come on to the school premises as they have done today, maintaining their social distancing space.

This way the drop off should be quite rapid for all the parents in Year One upwards allowing parents a smoother exit to go to work etc.

As mentioned in my letter, issued a few days ago, if parents continue to struggle with their drop off times (e.g. parents of more than one child, and where timings don’t seem to fit) then let your class teacher know and we will try to improve the situation.

So, in summary – please keep to your designated drop off slots. We will endeavour to have all classes opening up on time and good luck with the collection routine at the end of the school day!

Not ideal circumstances but eventually, together, we will get there!

Please note that the isolation period has now risen from 7 to 10 days in accordance with the latest advice. Please note that some posters issued to schools and passed on to parents may not have been updated to take into account this change in advice.

Please note that there are currently no plans for primary children to wear masks in school unlike students at secondary school who will now be wearing masks from September when out of class and moving about the school. Children may come to school wearing masks but in accordance with guidance these masks will need to be taken off on entry to school.

Update 20th July

Settle News released to parents via email with details of new (temporary) start and finish times for classes as follows:

All classes will be returning in September, although we still need to have staggered drop off and pick up times to reduce congestion at the start/end of the school day. Although the teaching time remains the same, classes will arrive and leave at the following times: Nursery and Reception: 8.45am-3.15pm Year 1/2: 9am-3.30pm Year 2: 8.30am-3pm Year 3/4: 8.45am-3.15pm Year 4/5: 9am-3.30pm Year 5/6: 8.30am-3pm Children with siblings can remain in classes at the end of the day until brothers/ sisters have also finished for the day. Please also watch out for emails and Facebook updates from Mr Wright regarding return to school plans for the Autumn term.
