About Reception

Welcome to the Reception Class page!

We all know that going to ‘big school’ can sometimes be a daunting step for our children. At Settle CE Primary we are very fortunate as for the majority of pupils, this worry is alleviated by having our own Pre-school provision on the school site. We work very closely with our colleagues next door to make the transition from Nursery into Reception Class as seamless as possible for our children, with free flow activities and transitional activities taking place all year round. For those children not starting in our Nursery, we will conduct visits to local pre-school providers and plan in 'taster sessions' for the children in school during the summer term to prepare them before the new school year starts.

We are a fortunate to have a very experienced Reception Team. Mrs Wright has over twenty years experience working in Early Years and Key Stage One. She has served as as Lead Teacher for North Yorkshire and is also an IT 'Early Years' Specialist. She is ably supported by teaching assistants Mrs Stow and Miss Knights, who provide a caring and supportive environment for all our children.

Our classroom is set up to provide a multitude of early learning activities that are aimed to develop a knowledge and awareness of the world and build a framework of early maths and literacy skills. The environment is organised into ‘areas of continuous provision’, which are enhanced every week to link with our themes.

We follow themes for two or three weeks at a time and these are led by the children’s interest and also driven by the seasons and festivals. We have full outdoor provision too and enjoy many of our activities out of doors – whatever the weather!

Each child has an Online Learning Journey in which we regularly communicate to parents. Through this means we document each child's progress throughout the year, and these are accessible all year round. We encourage parents to contribute to the online journal and to share their children’s achievements at home. It is important at this stage that school and home become real partners in the learning process.

Our prime approach to developing early Reading and Writing skills is through phonics and we have a phonics session every day. This is followed up enhanced provision in the Reading and the Writing areas for children to learn independently too.

The children are at the heart of everything we do in Foundation Stage, but our relationships with parents are equally vital and we pride ourselves in making sure that parents are fully informed of everything that goes on in school. We send out a weekly newsletter to explain the learning for the week and to celebrate individual achievement and pass on important school notices We also hope this academic year to be able to have sessions when parents can come and be a part of the experience, including ‘stay and play’ sessions and experience ‘learning journey drop-ins’.
